Bernstein Allardyce Backs England Coach

London -- Former president of the English Football Association (FA) David Bernstein has told the media that he had no regrets over appoint Roy Hodgson as England manager and said he saw Sam Allardyce as a strong contender to replace him.

Hodgson, who resigned this week, has been appointed England manager in May 2012 ago after Fabio Capello has resigned after a dispute with John Terry.

Hodgson, who had been considered for the position several times, previously has brought Switzerland into the last 16 of the 1994 World Cup and then they qualify for Euro 1996, and was able to make them as the third best team, behind Brazil and Germany in the FIFA rankings.

He also led Inter Milan to the final round of UEFA in 1997, and Fulham to the Europa League final in 2010, and continued with his experience at the international level, with Finland in 2006 and 2007.

"I believe we have chosen the best candidate. Someone who has tremendous credibility, has brought Switzerland was ranked third in the world, which has experience at international level, and record a good club, "said Bernstein.

"I do not want to go back to do what we have done and I am very sorry and surprised how it all ends."

Hodgson has led England to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012, losing to Italy through a round of penalty kicks, but they were eliminated from the 2014 World Cup without winning a single match and had again failed at Euro 2016 with a humiliating 2-1 defeat of Iceland in round of 16 big.

Bernstein, who left his role at the FA in 2013, said Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce, who also get duukungan of Jermain Defoe, may be the candidate most able to focus on the players psychologically.

"I'm not saying we should have a British manager, but managers in the UK, I certainly want to see Sam Allardyce. He is someone with a very strong character, "said Bernstein.

"I think he has a personality, a strong, he's a good technique manager, he is very experienced and he's someone who might be able to give you confidence.

"Because, obviously among other things, there is a psychological problem on our players, where they were seen playing on a stage with international football, where they should not only expect, from year to year, the errors of the individual where you do not will only look forward to the players. "
